Nursing care to suit every budget

Seniors often have many questions about how to finance a stay in the nursing unit of a residential and care centre. We have provided an overview of the general costs here. We will also be happy to offer you an individual consultation.

Services and costs of a nursing home stay

Various services are provided for guests daily in a residential and care centre, as well as in a retirement home. Many of the services are labour-intensive and require qualified staff. The costs vary significantly depending on the needs of the guests. A day in a nursing care unit can cost between 140 and 560 Swiss francs. We have provided an overview of the general costs here. We will also be happy to offer you an individual consultation.

Care costs

Nursing costs are based on the care needs of the guest, which are measured in nursing categories (0-12). However, depending on the canton, guests only pay a maximum of 22-23 Swiss francs per day (deductible) towards the cost of care. The remaining costs are covered by health insurance and public funds.

Support costs

Support includes conversations, activities, excursions and day-to-day life. These services are not factored into the care costs. Even people with low care needs still require various forms of support. These services are not included in the care costs and are paid for by the guests themselves.

Additional hospitality costs are incurred during the stay, such as for accommodation, full board, laundry service etc. These costs are borne by the guests themselves.

If pension income is not sufficient

If the cost of a stay in a care unit exceeds your pension income and your own financial resources, you may be entitled to supplementary benefits to the old-age and survivors' insurance (AHV). These benefits cover the difference between the actual costs charged and your own financial means. You can calculate a potential claim provisionally on the Pro Senectute website.

Important: Supplementary benefits are not paid automatically. As is the case with the AHV, you must apply. Furthermore, supplementary benefits are regulated differently from canton to canton.

How do I apply for supplementary benefits?

How do I apply for supplementary benefits?

You can submit your application for compensation to your municipality of residence. As the process can take up to 3 months, we recommend submitting the application for supplementary benefits to the municipality in advance. The municipality will then also decide whether to grant the application for supplementary benefits.

Change of canton

Change of canton

Please also note that a change of canton is not always possible as some of the care costs are borne by the guest's municipality of residence. Many families assume that parents can move to a nursing home in their canton of residence. Contact the current and future municipality of residence in this case.

In addition to supplementary benefits, guests can also apply for the ‘helplessness allowance’. This is intended for people who depend on the help of others to dress, get up, eat or care for themselves. The level of compensation does not depend on income, but rather on the degree of helplessness (mild, moderate or severe).

Our homes are open to all

Tertianum welcomes guests who are in receipt of supplementary benefits. We are happy to house all guests and proud to offer a home to people in need of care throughout Switzerland, irrespective of whether their pension income is sufficient to cover the costs.
